Bridge Holidays for 2012-13

We’re excited to be launching some fantastic Bridge holidays for 2012-13!

Join us for breathtaking scenery and friendly Bridge in exclusive luxury chalets in the Three Valleys, France.

Relax in front of a blazing log fire in the magnificent ancestral home of the Duke of Norfolk during an early Christmas break. In summer enjoy afternoon tea in the beautiful gardens and a stroll in the tranquil parkland and woods.

Taste the finest Burgundy wines with authentic French cuisine and hear from acclaimed local wine expert. Tour regional vineyards and world famous historic sites. Relax afterwards and enjoy Bridge at La Maison Du Chateau, a wonderful French manor house set in idyllic parkland.

Current action at the World Mind Sports Games

The England Women and Senior teams have qualified for the last 16 of the Word Mind Sports Games being held in Lille, France.  Sadly the Open team has been knocked out.  Take a look at what’s happening with the World Bridge Federation or English Bridge Union.

In addition to Bridge, the World Mind Sports Games includes Chess, Draughts, and Go.  It is held every four years in the year of the Olympics.

New Venues

We’re excited to be using two fantastic new venues to teach and to play Bridge from 10 September.  For most of the week (all day Tuesday, Wednesday evening, and Thursday evening) we’re going to be based at Henley Cricket Club. The pavilion has been superbly refurbished with bar and coffee shop and parking available outside. On Wednesday morning, we’re using the Nettlebed Village Club to play Duplicate Bridge. Again, parking available outside or across the road next to the Field Kitchen (an excellent coffee shop).

We continue at the Red Lion, Henley all day on Monday (including the evening).

Directions to Henley Cricket Club: From Henley, cross the river and look for a left turn just past The Little Angel pub and the road to Wargrave (on the right).

Back for Bridge

We’re back from 10 September with new venues, playing sessions, and Duplicate Bridge! As ever, we’re running lessons for all levels from absolute beginner to more experienced club players. There’s always our option to learn in a day (‘Bridge in a Day‘) rather than during a 6-week course.  Take a look at our Summer 2012 newsletter for all the details:

Supervised Play

There are now two options for Supervised Play, our relaxed and friendly practice sessions:

1. Learning and Improving

Designed particularly for those just starting Bridge and in their first year or two of learning to play. Sessions at 4pm on Monday at the Red Lion and 7pm on Tuesday at Henley Cricket Club.

2. Introduction to Duplicate Bridge

An opportunity to learn Duplicate Bridge – exciting and fun to play! Still our same learning environment in which to ask questions and discuss what might have happened. All welcome, including those completely new to Duplicate Bridge. Sessions at 10am on Tuesday and 7pm on Thursday both at Henley Cricket Club.

Playing Bridge

Our new Gentle Duplicate session for those who would just like to play Bridge. A welcoming and encouraging atmosphere with help on how to score and move. No partner required – come along and we’ll arrange the numbers. Sessions 10am to 12:30pm on Wednesday at Nettlebed Village Club.

Lessons

For details of our lessons, please take a look at our current programme and information on our courses.

Cancellation of Bridge session

I’m afraid we have to cancel the supervised play session at 10am this Tuesday (01 May) at the Red Lion Hotel in Henley. We are running as usual in the evening at 7pm. A reminder also that there is no Bridge at all (lessons or supervised play) the following week (from Monday 07 to Friday 11 May).

Bridge otherwise continues uninterrupted through to Thursday 21 June. Take a look at our programme for full details.  Be delighted to welcome as many of you as possible until then!

The Netherlands world champions

Winners of the open World Bridge Team Championships played 15-29 October 2011 in the Netherlands:

Open (known as the Bermuda Bowl) – The Netherlands (runners up USA 2)
Women (known as the Venice Cup) – France (runners up Indonesia)
Senior – France (runners up USA)

The English women came 4th in the Venice Cup.

Bridge on BBC Radio 4

Bridge was featured on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour on Thursday 20 October 2011.  This included a visit to the Young Chelsea Bridge Club where I played and taught for 5 years.

Follow this link to listen to the programme (the Bridge starts after 30 minutes).

Supervised Play for Beginners

From Tuesday 01 November we’re running a Supervised Play session designed specifically for those who have just started playing Bridge.  This complements our Bridge lessons and would be ideal for anyone who has completed our first course, Beginning Bridge (Red).  It’s an opportunity to enjoy playing Bridge in a relaxed and welcoming environment and to learn and improve by asking questions as you play.  No need to book in advance or come with a partner – just turn up!

The session runs from 7pm to 9pm and is held at the White Hart Hotel in Nettlebed.  The price is £9 (although the first session is included at no charge with a course of lessons with us).

Please get in touch with any questions or for further information.

No Bridge during half term week

Please note that there are no Bridge lessons or Supervised Play sessions during half term week (24-28 October).

Bridge lessons from 31 October

Our next courses of Bridge lessons start from 31 October.  These will be held at the Red Lion Hotel in Henley, the White Hart Hotel in Nettlebed, and Hennerton Golf Club near Wargrave.  We’re repeating our introductory offer which proved so popular: come to the first lesson for free!

For those who have never played Bridge before, Beginning Bridge runs on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon.  No prior knowledge or experience of Bridge or other card games necessary.

For those looking to revise and consolidate the essentials, Refresh & Build 1 is held on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.  This is ideal for social players and for anyone returning to Bridge.

We continue to offer Supervised Play at 4pm on Monday, 9:30am on Wednesday, and 7pm on Thursday.  Suitable for all levels, this is an opportunity to practise in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  No need to book – all welcome.

Please take a look at our full programme for further details or get in touch with any questions.  We’d be delighted if you joined us!
